Tape neighboring pieces together with 2 to 3 inch masking tape or as directed by the manufacturer.

Generally seams should run in the same direction as most foot traffic. The manufacturer recommends how to orient the tiles. Lay out the carpet pad perpendicular to the direction you plan to install the carpet image 1 and staple it near the tackless strips with a staple hammer image 2. Carpet does have a direction usually indicated on the carpet backing.

Provide an appropriate surface upon which to install carpet including confirmation of concrete moisture and alkali conditions cleanliness surface quality and floor levelness. Ideally you would install carpet on stairs as if the roll were rolling down the stairs. Due to the nature of the carpet this is the direction it should be installed whether on the floor or stairs. Provide drawings with the approved location of seams edge moldings carpet direction and accessories adhesives cushion etc.

Consider carpet pile direction when seaming. A carpeted surface should be. This is the simplest carpet tile installation pattern. Step 5 staple any pad seams.

Obviously if your carpet has a pattern seaming two pieces requires careful attention to matching the pattern between adjoining pieces. Mix carpet tiles from different packs to account for dye lot variations. But even for non patterned carpeting you can detect the direction of the carpet s pile by looking at it from different directions in strong light. On stairways the pile should sweep down.

Extra hidden carpet should be folded back at the top and bottom of stairs so that as the edges of the tread are worn the carpet can be moved to hide the wear. After the old flooring and carpet cushion have been pulled up vacuum the subfloor before the new carpet is installed to minimize dirt and dust. The installation options for square carpet tiles are fairly limited but offer the opportunity to create patterns and designs that can t be achieved with broadloom carpet. Use a staple hammer tacker to fasten the carpet pad against the edge of the tack strip.

The carpet layer has finished and at first glance it looks great. Keep in mind that your new floor coverings need to be installed over a structurally sound subfloor. Essentially you can either rotate tiles or offset them to create patterns. Any damage from insects water or other problems should be repaired prior to carpet installation.

Install carpet pad so that any seams will be at right angles to those in the carpet. Carpet tiles will have arrows on the back that indicate the direction of the carpet pile. Stretch the padding so that the pieces are butted tightly. Any two carpet tiles facing in different directions will appear to be slightly different colors.
